If your console is running Luma 10.2.1 or higher, it is 100% safe to update. You can check your Luma version by holding (Select) while booting your console.

If your console is on an older Luma version, you should <ahref="checking-for-cfw">update Luma before you update your console to 11.17.0.

If your console does not yet have custom firmware, do NOT update to the latest version, as installation methods may be more difficult.

If your unmodified console is ALREADY on 11.17.0, this guide has been updated accordingly. Specifically, New3DS-family consoles have a <ahref="homebrew-launcher-(super-skaterhax)">free software method, while Old3DS-family consoles will need to use <ahref="alternate-exploits">alternate exploits that rely on external hardware or software.

<h2id="things-you-should-know-about-the-3ds">Things you should know about the 3DS

This guide works with every retail console in the Nintendo 3DS family of consoles (including the 3DS, 3DS XL/LL, 2DS, New 3DS, New 3DS XL/LL, and New 2DS XL/LL), regardless of region or firmware.

Puedes seguir esta guía siempre y cuando puedas descargar archivos de Internet y copiarlos a tu tarjeta SD. Depending on your computer/phone/electronic device, you may need to purchase a USB to SD card adapter to allow your computer to read your SD card.

</details>
<details>

Ubicación de la tarjeta SD, tipo y capacidad

The location of the SD card slot and the type of SD card that is accepted depends on the model of your 3DS. More information can be found on <ahref="https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/271/~/how-to-insert-an-sd-card-or-microsd-card">Nintendo’s official support page.

The 3DS can read SD cards of any capacity (even those larger than 32GB), but the card must be formatted as FAT32 (not exFAT or NTFS). You can use one of the following tools to format your SD card, depending on your operating system: <ahref="formatting-sd-(windows)">Windows, <ahref="formatting-sd-(mac)">macOS, <ahref="formatting-sd-(linux)">Linux. SD cards larger than 128GB are not recommended due to known issues with custom themes and GBA/DS graphics.

<pclass="notice--warning">To follow this guide, you’ll need an SD card with a capacity of at least 2GB.

<pclass="notice--info">Si quieres, puedes comprobar si tu tarjeta SD tiene errores antes de seguir esta guía usando <ahref="h2testw-(windows)">H2testw (Windows), <ahref="f3-(linux)">F3 (Linux), o <ahref="f3xswift-(mac)">F3XSwift (Mac)

By modding your console, you subject it to the remote (but non-zero) possibility of the console being banned from online play or bricked (rendered non-functional). Incorrect file placement will NOT brick your console, but purposely skipping instructions might. Similarly, the last ban wave occurred over five years ago, but there is no guarantee that another one will not occur in the future.

In this guide, you will copy files that are downloaded on your computer/phone to your 3DS SD card. Many of these files come from GitHub, so refer to the above screenshot if you’re unfamiliar with how to download files from there.

Some of the files that you will be asked to download come in the <codeclass="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">.zip
file format, which is used to package multiple files into one file.

When you are told to “copy (file) from (file).zip”, that means that you need to open (or “extract”) the ZIP file. Inside the ZIP file will be the file you’re looking for, after which you can copy it to the specified location on your SD card.

On most operating systems, you can extract files by double-clicking the file. If this doesn’t work, you can install a reputable third-party extraction tool like <ahref="https://7-zip.org/">7-zip instead.

If your computer is running Windows, file extensions may be hidden by default, which may make it harder to find the files you’re looking for. Para habilitar las extensiones de archivos, sigue <ahref="file-extensions-(windows)">estas instrucciones.
