(Please note that sysDowngrader crashing into said screen does not mean you softbricked. Try turning your system off and on again: If it boots, you have a "partial downgrade". If you land again in the Nintendo error screen, you have a softbrick.)
The reason for this is unknown, but can be prevented by performing a system format *before* downgrading. It seems to happen very often on systems with ambassador status or who have DSiWare installed.
