Qualquer cartucho possui uma cópia da versão de sistema necessária para poder jogá-lo, permitindo que qualquer um com uma versão inferior use o cartucho para atualizar para aquela versão (mesmo sem conexão com a Internet).

Note que atualizações por Cartucho só fornecerão atualizações para recursos principais do sistema, tais como Configuração do console, Menu HOME, etc. Cart Updates will not deliver updates to Nintendo 3DS Sound and Network features, such as System Transfer, Internet Browser, StreetPass Mii Plaza, or eShop.

This means that using a Cart Update from a version containing an older Nintendo 3DS Sound version *(<7.0.0 for Old 3DSs in the EUR, JPN, KOR, and USA regions)* to one that introduced a newer Nintendo 3DS Sound version will break [Soundhax](homebrew-launcher-(soundhax))! Isso também significa que uma atualização por cartucho NÃO irá instalar um navegador, caso ainda não tenha um. Isto irá **apenas** atualizar a versão do sistema propriamente dita *(por exemplo, 2.1.0-0 -> 6.0.0-0)*. O último número *(o -0)* **não** irá mudar.
